Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency is issuing a warning about leaving alcohol based hand sanitizers in the car during a heat wave due to the increased risk of fire. As the temperature rises, the evaporation will increase and even the slightest spark or heat source may ignite the ethanol.
A spark can be created by opening or closing a car door.
Having hand sanitizer in the car is a generally a good idea, as the germs are present and thrive in a closed area with a raised temperature, but do select a non-alcoholic version that does not damage the car interior. Some gels, even though not being applied to the surface, will transfer over to the steering wheel and gear shift – and ultimately damage or discolor the surface.
Hygiene of Swedens hand sanitizer is a safe option as it is a non-flammable solution. that will not damage surfaces.
